News out of the Scotland Camp is that the Scottish play maker has been sent back to his club after choosing to leave the Scottish squad ahead of there Six Nations opener against Ireland.
It is reported that the fly half choose to leave as a result of breaking team protocol by drinking alcohol and missing training sessions off the back of this.
Russell was asked by coach Gregor Townsend if he wanted to stay and help the team prepare for the game against Ireland but the fly half chose to go back to his club Racing 92 instead.
With Scotland under a lot of pressure to perform after a poor showing at the recent world cup in Japan this is the last thing that Scotland and in particular Gregor Townsend needed.
Russell is a brilliant player, a world class fly half, he is also a bit of a maverick and these sorts of players can be difficult to manage and control. Townsend has made a strong stance by dropping Russell from the squad but in doing so will hopefully have made Russell realise that he can't get away with this kind of behaviour.
Russell is one of the squads senior players and has not acted in the way he should of done, Russell has put his teams result in doubt and put more pressure on the squad.
In my opinion Russell should of stayed with the squad and acted as a professional and supported the players in the squad who will have to step up and perform in his place.
